And here it is, friends. The future leader of the free world, who takes office in just a few short weeks, has been selected -- or, elected. I have a lot of feelings regarding the past 48 hours, but I've summed it up to the following...
1. Sometimes, You Need to Take People Seriously
The SNL sketches were funny. The memes circulating social media made the 24-hour news cycle just that much more bearable. The jokes at the office were appreciated because they hit a target (seemingly) everyone disliked. But at a certain point, one needs to draw the line between humorous and hurtful. Lambasting a presidential candidate for his self-assured directives in how to accost women while not addressing the fundamental errors in his moral compass and their implications was one stepping stone to where we are today.
2. There is a Difference Between Politics and Morals, and Your Humanity is at Stake
An opinion for tightening border control and immigration rules can be valid, logical, and reasonable. To aim to completely close the door on an entire ethnicity for an untrue, offensive stereotype is immoral and reflects your character for the world to see. It is also important to differentiate between a personal background and a career - someone who may very well be personally untrustworthy and a snake was probably our best shot in continuing American democracy.
3. There is Still Hope
A political candidate's views does not necessarily reflect a nation's. The average citizen still has ways to get his/her voice heard. The American government has a system of checks and balances in place for such a situation. Even with certain bodies of power skewing a certain power, one still has representation in Congress, Senate, and House of Representatives. After all, we still have mid-term elections in 2018.
Time will tell if who voted into power will stay true to their word and agendas.
