It's as though there's a switch that goes off as soon as the last kid in a Captain America costume skips away from your home, candy safely tucked in basket. The holidays are coming. 'Where am I spending Thanksgiving? How will I get home in time for Black Friday shopping? Will x and y get along if I invite them over? Is this pumpkin puree from 2011 safe for consumption in 2014 (answer: it most likely is not)?'
Even with all this self-imposed madness, it's crucial to make time for yourself. I'm grateful that my friends MS and AP dragged me out to see a Devils hockey game on the 28th vs the Detroit Red Wings. Since it was in the evening, I spent the morning and early afternoon with my family poking around, doing some passive Black Friday shopping.
In 2014, it should go without saying that the best deals for indulging in needless consumerism are to be found online. Unless you're splurging on electronics/household items like a 56-piece kitchen set from Williams Sonoma that includes hand warmers for your paws post-ice-cream-scooping, just sign up for emails and wait for the discounts and free shipping offers to roll in (don't google the kitchen set; I'm quite sure it does not exist).
I arrived in Newark generally unscathed save for a few bruises from overzealous housewives. I used to intern near the Prudential Center, and so am semi-familiar with the area--but seeing as it was only my second game ever, walking into the Rock is always intense and is something that can't adequately be put into words.
The Red Wings are a formidable team, and I rooted for them during the playoffs last year. Though it was a strong effort, the Devils ended up losing in a shootout, yet that didn't dampen the overall spirit of the night. Seeing friends you made in college serves as a reminder of the person you were at that time.
And if they're cool enough people, they'll push you to become the person you're meant to be in the future.
